"Tish'ah beAv"
"Tish'ah beAv" is one of the fast
days of the Jewish calendar in memory of the destruction of the First and
the Second Temples in Jerusalem.
- The meaning of the words is a date of the Jewish calendar, namely "nine in
(the month of) Av".
- According to Jewish tradition it was on this date that the First Temple
was destroyed (586 B.C.E.) by the New Babylonian empire.
The Temple was rebuilt about sixty years later under the Persian Emperor
Darius, reconstructed by the King Herodus in the year twenty B.C.E. and
destroyed again by Titus on "Tish'ah beAv" in the year 70 C.E. during the great
revolt of the Jews against the Roman empire (see picture).
