Mahane Yehuda is Alive and Well


Vivienne Silver of Silver Print Photographic Gallery

Purpose: Document everyday Jewish life in Jerusalem with the help of a camera, tape recorder and pen. Explore a small area of Mahane Yehuda as a group and focus on it as a microcosm of Israeli society.

Process: Group drama presentation with texts by Eliezer Ben Yehuda. Field trip - walk through two streets of historic Mahane Yehuda and draw map with symbols. See Jewish institutions. Divide into small working groups to interview local personalities. Photograph and write about the hustle and bustle of the food market. Conclude with cooking lesson in local restaurant.

Implementors: Vivienne Silver, photographer and photo historian, writes and lectures on early Jewish photography in Israel.

Target group: Youth with curiosity, ability to explore, art and communications background. Ideal age: 15 - 18.

No. of Participants: 5-15.

Duration of activity: 1 1/2 - 2 hours.

Location of activity: Jerusalem - The food market of Mahane Yehuda.

Aids and materials: Tape recorder, Pens, blind map, texts, paper, photographs to identify.

Special requirements: Dress modestly. Bring camera, hat and canteen.

Project coordinator: Ms. Vivienne Silver-Brody, photographer and photo historian, writes and lectures on early Jewish photography in Israel. Also conducts walks for families and adult and youth groups around the Old City of Jerusalem in the footsteps of 19th century photographers, with relevant slide presentations of historic interest.
Ms. Vivienne Silver-Brody's photo center at Ein Hod offers a number of varied activities such as printing photograms in the sun, and lextures on the development of Israel photography from the beginning of the twentieth century; these being in the conterxt of the growth of the Zionist Yishuv. lectures and activities can be tailored to the needs of individual groups, both teenagers and adults.
