DEMOCRACY IN ACTION
Hashomer Hatzair World Movement
Purpose: Explore the workings of democracy in a vibrant
community; get to know the kibbutz through its leaders; learn
about the history of the kibbutz movement.
Process: Introduction - video about kibbutz, discussion.
Research - interview kibbutz officers, search through kibbutz
archives for historical facts and figures, interview veteran
kibbutz members. Summary - discussion, video of interviews,
charts on overhead projector (demographics, work branches, budgets
etc.). Application - simulation games.
Project coordinator: Founded in Europe in 1913, Hashomer Hatzair
Zionist Youth Organization was the first Jewish youth movement.
It established the Kibbutz Artzi Federation, coordinating 85
kibbutzim in Israel, and is currently active in 18 countries
around the world. Many of its experienced counselors settled in
Israel and became members of kibbutzim.
Implementors: Experienced counselors who are also kibbutz
members.
Target group: Teens aged 16-18.
No. of Participants: 20-40.
Duration of activity: 2 - 3 days after work on the kibbutz.
Location of activity: One of several kibbutzim in Israel.
Aids and materials: Questionnaire for interviewers; tape recorder
and, optimally, video camera to record interviews.
Special requirements: None.
