BLOOD, LAND AND HISTORY - ROOTEDNESS AND NATIONALISM
Educational Foundation for Jewish Settlement in the Galilee
Purpose: Help participants gain a deeper understanding of the
relationship between Zionism and Palestinian nationalism and their
own personal ties to Israel and to their Diaspora communities. Give
participants an authentic taste of life in the Galilee as it is
lived by both Jews and Arabs.
Process: Workshop consists of three parts:
- an active text-study
component in which participants analyze and respond to a selection
of passages on the relationship between geography and identity,
- a simulated land ownership dispute conducted at an archeological
site and
- field trip and in-depth tour of a Moslem Arab village.
Implementors: Dr. Marc Rosenstein, Director,
and Deborah Morse,
senior educator of the Foundation.
Target Group: High school and college students and adults.
No. of Participants: 15-50.
Duration of Activity: A full day, or two half days (Late afternoon
one day through noon the next).
Location of Activity: Shorashim (central Galilee) and surrounding
area.
Aids and Materials: Participants receive a map and a booklet
containing the texts to be studied.
Special Requirements: None.
Additional Modules
Putting Together the Galilee
An active geography exercise, using a room-sized relief map of the
Galilee. Useful as an introduction to a tour of the area.
National Identity/ Religious Identity -- the Siege of
Yodfat.
Tour the site of ancient Yodfat. Study Josephus' text of argument
with his men - suicide vs. surrender. Compare to Massada. Discuss
implications of the arguments on definition of Jewish identity.
Authority and Leadership - Rabbi Judah Hanasi at Beit
Sha'arim
Tour ancient Beit Sha'arim. Study texts relating to personality
and significance of Rabbi Hanasi. Discuss Hebraism and Hellenism
and/or models of community leadership. Similar program at Tzipori.
The Ironies of Power Minorities and Majorities
Visit Peki'in village. Study text at cave of Rabbi bar Yochai and
see synagogue. Meet with members of Druze community. Discuss
minority group roles and responses throughout Peki'in history.
