Pre-Program
This first stage of the project is crucial. It involves identifying suitable
individuals and recruiting them to the program. This is a long-term investment
and it is essential that the young people and students chosen are capable
and that they will give something back to their communities in a leadership
role.
Recruitment will be carried out jointly by JAFI, JDC and Hillel.
Stages:
1.9.99 - 1.11.99 : Recruitment, selection and training of participants
across the FSU
1.11.99 : Launching of preparatory seminars
Once the selection process is complete the major part of the pre-program
comes into operation. This involves three-hour weekly educational seminars
on Jewish Zionist topics.
The following topics will be covered:
Judaism and Israel
History, tradition, modern Israel, Israel in the year 2000 and the Jewish
world today.
Leadership
Coordinating activities, training techniques, team building and developing
young Jewish leadership.
Holocaust and Heroes
As well as treating these topics together there will also be a separate
seminar on the Holocaust alone. The subject of the Holocaust will be treated
in context and not as the main theme.
16-18.2.2000 : 1st Preparatory Seminar - Israel
Whilst preparations will be continuing in the FSU on developing leadership
skills, one month before participants are due to arrive in Israel the
Israeli tour leaders will meet to prepare for the Israel Experience component
of the program.
The 16 Israeli leadership personnel will meet for three days to familiarize
themselves with the Israel Experience programs and to develop any additional
educational components.
The Israeli team will also undergo orientation to prepare them for the
young people they will be leading and their specific needs.
19.3.2000 : 2nd Preparatory Seminar - FSU
The Israeli teams will travel to the communities from where the groups
are being drawn including St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, Tashkent and Samara.
They will attend a one-day seminar with the local personnel getting to
know them and going over the Israel experience program.
Following this will be a two-day seminar with the actual participants
preparing them for the visit to Israel and further developing the leadership
theme. The seminars end with participants travelling to Israel for the
Israel experience part of the project.
