The Jewish Theater of Austria is trying to rescue an extraordinary
heritage site that was Aryanized in 1938 and has escaped post-war
destruction through a series of lucky accidents.

The Vienna Nestroyhof, which was designed to house a great Jewish
Theater in its courtyard, was built by the Zionist Viennese architect,
Oskar Marmorek, a close friend and associate of Theodor Herzl. (Marmorek
was the literary model for the character of "Steineck" - the architect
of the Jewish State - in Herzl's utopian novel "Altneuland".)
