Right on Time

Introduction:

Right on Time is a series of educational booklets designed by the Israel-based Centre for Educational Technology's Department of Current Events and Values. Each month, hundreds of Israeli educators use these booklets to discuss current events with their students.

Each issue of Right on Time deals with a burning topic on the public agenda, either within the Jewish world in general, or in Israel in particular. The material familiarizes students with some of the most important dilemmas facing the Jewish People today. The creative activities suggested in the booklet give youngsters an opportunity to discuss the issue at hand, and form their own personal opinions. This year, the Centre has initiated development of a special series targeted specifically at Jewish youth in the Diaspora.

Issue No.1 deals with the dilemma of Democracy vs. Terrorism by exploring whether curfews and collective punishment are legitimate means of fighting terror, and what types of practices used in the interrogations of suspected terrorists are either acceptable or unlawful. Unfortunately, these questions are among the major moral and practical dilemmas that confront Israeli society today. (To view the issue please press here)

Issue No. 2 presents the dilemmas arising from the fact that Israel is both a Jewish and a democratic state. The booklet encourages students to ask themselves what role traditional Judaism should play within the democratic state of Israel, to think about the relationship between secular and religious groups in the country, to compare Jewish culture and Israeli culture, and to discuss issues of equality and self-expression as they pertain to non-Jewish and Arab citizens. Issue No.3 is a special edition prepared especially for Israel Education Month (IEM)!

This creative and unique issue of Right on Time deals in-depth with the subject of the connection between Diaspora Jews and Israel. This topic - how do Jews relate to each other and to the Land of Israel - must be considered by Jews everywhere, both inside and outside of Israel. The booklet examines questions such as: What do Jews from different backgrounds and cultures mean to each other? What role should the Jewish State play in forming our self-identity as Jews? What meaning does Zionism have today, at the beginning of the 21st century? (To view the issue please press here)
