SETTLEMENT IN THE SECOND DECADE

The second decade of Statehood was characterized by a great deal of settlement activity. In the Aravah (the valley stretching from south of the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Eilat) large water reservoirs were discovered. This spurred agricultural activity, and new settlements joined the two which were already in existence. In the 60’s much effort was invested in settling the northern border with Lebanon as well as the region of Gilboa, in an attempt to reinforce the desolate border areas. During the 1960’s and after the Six Day War a new settlement region was established, the Besor area. In 1969, after the death of Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, its name was changed to Eshkol.
