Having lost in battle what they could have had in
the peace envisioned by the 1947 Partition Plan, Palestinian Arab
terrorist groups, called "Fedayeen", began systematic raids against
the Israeli civilian population. 1,300 Israelis were killed
and wounded by Arab terrorists between 1949 and 1956.(1) The
"Fedayeen" operated from bases located in and controlled by Egypt,
Lebanon and Jordan.
